Take-Two Files Copyright Complaint; GitHub Takedown of Unofficial Multi Theft Auto (MTA) for GTA: San Andreas

The unofficial repository for the Multi Theft Auto (MTA) modification for GTA: San Andreas has been removed from GitHub following a copyright complaint filed by the game's publisher, Take-Two Interactive. Users attempting to open the MTA project page on the hosting service are now met with a notice explaining the removal.

According to the publisher's statement, investigators found portions of GTA: San Andreas source code among the files made available in the repository—material that, Take-Two asserts, is not permitted to be published. Supporters of the mod countered that Rockstar Games, the original developer, had in the past released parts of the code publicly to help the community maintain and expand fan projects, and they pointed to that history in response to the takedown.

MTA, alongside San Andreas Multiplayer (SAMP), has long been one of the most widely used modifications to enable online multiplayer in GTA: San Andreas. Over roughly two decades, the community has launched and sustained many servers that continue to operate and retain active player bases, making the mod a cornerstone of the game's continued popularity among fans.

The removal raises questions about the future availability and maintenance of those community servers. It remains unclear whether MTA-related projects and the servers they power will be able to continue operating as before after the copyright strike from Take-Two, leaving players and server administrators uncertain about what comes next.
