Todd Howard, head of Bethesda Softworks, recently reflected on the studio's approach to The Elder Scrolls VI. In an interview with a gaming outlet, he admitted that the project was revealed prematurely and suggested that players should mentally set the announcement aside for now rather than expect immediate updates or a near-term release.
During the conversation Howard noted that the studio has become more conservative about public announcements since Starfield. When reminded that The Elder Scrolls VI was first revealed back in 2018 yet has seen virtually no official updates since then, he responded bluntly: 'Imagine that we announced nothing. It doesn't exist.' He explained that the public reveal was primarily intended to let fans know the studio's long-term plans rather than to signal an impending launch.
Howard declined to provide meaningful new information about the game's status. He offered only that there is nothing he can say about a release window and added that, from his perspective, there was nothing new to report: 'I haven't heard anything about it.' That restraint reflects a broader desire at Bethesda to avoid premature promises and the fallout that can follow when development timelines shift.
The sole concrete technical detail Howard disclosed was the engine: The Elder Scrolls VI is being developed on Creation Engine 3. He explained that work on Starfield led the studio to develop new technologies and workflows that made it possible to transfer existing progress to the upgraded engine, and to pursue development more efficiently. According to Howard, Bethesda does have working builds of the game, but he did not specify how far along those builds are or what stage of development the project is in overall.
The Elder Scrolls VI was first announced in 2018, and official communication from Bethesda about the title has been sparse since then. Industry speculation places a potential release in 2027 or later, though no date has been confirmed. Howard has previously suggested that the next mainline Elder Scrolls installment will represent a return to the classic RPG formula that defined Bethesda's earlier games, but for now fans must wait for the studio to be ready with further details.
